Ganja is one of Azerbaijan's oldest cities and the historic capital of the region of Arran. Trade routes passed through it, poets and rulers were born here, and city life thrived.
The earthquake of 1139 and invasions changed the city's fate more than once, but Ganja always revived. It is known by the red brick of which its mosques, mausoleums and houses are built.

In the mountains near Ganja lies Lake Goygol — one of the most beautiful in Azerbaijan. By legend it was born in the earthquake of 1139, when a landslide of Mount Kapaz dammed a river.
